I got a rejection email today from Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show, but it wasn’t the usual type. It seems that sometime after I submitted my story (“Silvique’s Cure”) the magazine decided to go out of business. Their June issue is apparently the last one and they’re no longer buying stories.
Sorry to see it go, there were always great stories there that were a little different from what you’d find at other places. The economics of online magazines are brutal.
So, yes, I’ve stepped on yet another variety of minefield in the slush war: the market ceases to exist right after submission.
